Bend's volcanic soil — primarily pumice and sandy loam — drains quickly and has low water-holding capacity. Irrigation schedules need to account for this: shorter, more frequent cycles are generally more effective than long single-cycle watering.

The most frequent repairs we see in Bend are: broken or clogged sprinkler heads (especially after winter), stuck or failed zone valves, damaged lateral lines from freeze-thaw cycles, controller failures, and backflow preventer issues. Bend's hard freezes are the primary cause of winter damage — systems that weren't properly blown out are especially vulnerable.
Signs of an irrigation leak include: unexpectedly high water bills, soggy or wet areas in your yard when the system hasn't run, low pressure in one or more zones, or a zone that won't shut off. A backflow preventer is a device that stops irrigation water from flowing back into your home's drinking water supply. The City of Bend requires backflow preventers on all irrigation systems connected to the municipal water supply. Annual backflow testing is required by the city. Newport Avenue offers backflow testing as part of our Priority Irrigation Membership.
